The Donna Marathon

This weekend I ran the Donna marathon in Jacksonville with six great friends and my Mom as our wonderful "crew". The Donna was started by Donna Deegan, a Jacksonville native and newscaster who had breast cancer. She is a survivor and decided to start the marathon, half marathon and relay in order to raise money for breast cancer research. 100% of the proceeds from the race go to research and with 18,000 participants, that is a lot of runners supporting a fantastic cause.

The race started at the Mayo clinic then took you down to the beach (2 miles of the course we actually ran ON the beach), through the cute beach communities and into near by neighborhoods then back to Mayo. The crowd support was the best I've ever had in a marathon, and everything was pink any way you turned since pink is the ribbon color for breast cancer. Even some of the men who ran supported the race by wearing pink tutus over their clothes or pink skirts! Seeing runners and people clapping for us who are survivors was the best part about the race, including my friend, Christina, who was cheering for us at mile 18 and kept us going strong to the finish. She can beat cancer and we decided we could finish the race with all we had just for her.

Perfect weekend for an even better cause - I would recommend this race to anyone who wants to do it!
