As a surprise to Maggie who is a huge Alanis Morisette fan, I got tickets for her show at the Hard Rock Live in Orlando on October 21 for her Flavors of Entanglement tour. Alanis delivered an energetic, hits-friendly show Tuesday night. With a five-piece band, she sounded virtually the same live as she does on record, and alternated between electric and acoustic guitar, and even played her signature harmonica.
Before she even took the stage, Alanis' voice soared through the concert hall as a pianist segued into the haunting opening solo City of Angels theme "Uninvited". Of course, we couldn't remain seated and cheered and sang along with her even if most of the crowd was sitting and just clapping. We still don't understand how people can sit during her concert!
Though familiar songs like "All I Really Want" and "Head Over Feet" brought the most response from the audience, it was her newer, quieter material that resonated most with avid fans like me and Maggie. Heart-wrenching "Not As We" was wonderful and we sang along just as loud as Alanis. She sang "Moratorium" from her new album then did a brief acoustic set including the oldies but goodies "You Learn" and "Ironic". She closed (earlier than we wanted) her show with "Thank U" and we reluctantly went home. We can now say we've seen Alanis live and she is authentic and just as powerful in person as on her albums.
